Website Accessibility

Our Commitment to Accessibility

At the School Board of Highlands County, we believe that everyone deserves equal access to information and resources. We are committed to ensuring that our website (www2.highlands.k12.fl.us) is accessible to individuals with disabilities, and we are continuously working to improve its usability for all users.

Our Approach to Accessibility:

  • Adherence to WCAG 2.0 Level AA: We minimually follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 Level AA, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), as our standard for accessibility. These guidelines provide a comprehensive framework for creating accessible web content.

  • Ongoing Evaluation and Improvement: We regularly evaluate our website's accessibility through automated and manual testing, using online compliance checkers and user feedback. We are committed to making continuous improvements to ensure that our website remains accessible.

  • User-Friendly Navigation: We have designed our website with clear and consistent navigation, featuring a prominent top-level menu and intuitive drop-down menus.

  • Font Size Flexibility: Users can easily adjust font sizes to their preference using standard browser controls or keyboard shortcuts.

  • Meaningful Image Alternatives: We use images strategically and provide detailed alternative text (alt text) for all images that convey important information. This ensures that users who cannot see images can still access the content.

  • Text-Based Content Availability: All essential content is available in text format, ensuring that the website remains fully functional even when images are disabled.

  • PDF Documents: We are committed to making our downloadable PDF documents as accessible as possible. We strive to ensure that PDFs are tagged for proper reading order, include alternative text for images, when scanned documents are used, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is utilized, and are structured for easy navigation with assistive technologies. We recognize that ensuring full PDF accessibility can present challenges, and we are continuously working to improve our processes.
